There are 5 key Volunteer roles at Fitzroy Community Hospice:
Care & Support
- Providing support for families and carers by being a calming, reassuring and constant presence
- Providing support to patients through general conversation and companionship e.g., reading, playing games or music, watching TV, sharing stories
- Assisting in keeping family lounge spaces and patient rooms tidy
- Assisting with running errands and the provision of drinks and light refreshments
- Providing meal support to patients, as needed
- Tending to patient flowers and other gifts
- Providing diversional therapy in line with the wants and needs of the individual patient
- Assisting with any recordings or messages that the patient wishes to provide for family/loved ones
- Providing cultural care and support, as appropriate and on request
- Providing timely feedback to senior clinical staff regarding changing patient and carer needs.
Administration
- Greeting patients, families and other loved ones, visiting health practitioners, supporters, donors and stakeholders
- Receiving in-person and phone enquiries, providing directions and information
- Assisting with hospice access e.g., use of the lift, provision of wheelchairs
- Escorting visitors to their destination
- Assisting with printing, compilation of information packs, scanning of information
- Undertaking basic data entry and providing clerical support.
Hospitality
- Assisting with the preparation of food and/or meals
- Delivering patient meals and offering refreshments to patients and families/carers
- Undertaking dishwashing and kitchen cleaning
- Performing tidying tasks in patient rooms, communal areas, public/staff facilities, and offices
- Monitoring and restocking food and non-clinical supplies across the facility
- Assisting with keeping the linen store tidy, and provision of linen supplies on request
- Laundering patient/ family personal items, on request.
Maintenance
- Lawn mowing and edge trimming
- Gardening tasks including weeding, trimming, pruning, watering, fertilising, pest control and mulching
- Removal of exterior rubbish and maintenance of office waste bins
- Internal and exterior maintenance tasks (as required)
Fundraising
- Support the Community Engagement Coordinator with event planning execution and evaluation
- Promote the work of Fitzroy Community Hospice at various local expos and forums, providing information to the public and referring enquiries as necessary
- Assist with printing, laminating and delivery of supporter/donor certificates and complete other donor stewardship activities as required.
Auxiliary
The Fitzroy Community Hospice Auxiliary is a slightly separate group of like-minded volunteers who support the Hospice through self-driven fundraising and community engagement activities. Working closely with our Community Engagement Coordinator, Auxiliary members meet monthly and share a strong commitment to making a meaningful difference for the Hospice and the community it serves. Regular activities include raffles, morning teas and race day functions.
